    The wealth is locked up in real estate and controlling interests in many big businesses.

    Probably pretty spread out.
    They have priceless art, lost books, marbles, gold, cash, real estate (like their entire little country there) historical real estate (Notre Dame comes to mind) etc.

    The Vatican made a few very good deals with Mussolini, and now they control something like 10 or 15% of the Italian stock market.
    Good leverage if the Italian government ever tries to give the Vatican any trouble.
